What is heritage?
Heritage is "anything that we value collectively and want to hand onto the future". Our heritage encompasses the natural and built environment and our culture from our archaeological sites, architecture, old buildings, wildlife habitats, landscapes, seascapes, heritage gardens, railways and canals to our folklore, stories, traditions, language, songs, poems, and traditional crafts and skills. Our built, natural and cultural heritage gives each town, village and community its identity and sense of place, and is there to be experienced and enjoyed as part of everyday life by everyone in the community.
We want to hear your views
Monaghan County Council is developing the fourth heritage plan for the County (2026-2030). The plan will set out how we will protect and manage our heritage and connect people with it in a sustainable way.
As part of the process, we want to hear the views of both organisations and individual members of the community. This is a crucial opportunity for us to shape the future of our heritage initiatives, ensuring they reflect our shared vision and priorities. While previous Heritage Plans have also covered biodiversity and natural heritage, a new separate Biodiversity Plan for County Monaghan has been developed for 2026-2030 so this Heritage Plan will now focus on built and cultural heritage.
