Part 8 Planning - Active travel link across the Ulster Canal, alongside the protected masonry Horseshoe Bridge structure Monaghan Town.

A new active travel link will be constructed across the Ulster Canal, alongside the protected masonry Horseshoe Bridge structure (Reference ID: Local 18). This will require the construction of new bridge structure comprising a 27.0 m long, single span, precast beam and slab bridge deck, made integral with the abutments. The superstructure will comprise a single pretensioned W-beam with an in-situ concrete deck slab which varies in width from 3.0 m to 4.4 m to provide sufficient space for the active travel scheme and to accommodate the curved plan of the existing bridge structure. The substructure will comprise wall type abutments with wingwalls, founded on spread footings. Besides the bridge construction, the project will involve developing approach embankments and footways, upgrading controlled crossings, and implementing a signalised shuttle system for motorists crossing the bridge. Pedestrians and cyclists will have priority access. Maintenance work, such as vegetation removal and masonry repointing, will also be carried out on the west-facing side of the parapet, spandrel wall, and abutments of the existing masonry structure.
